Harshad Mehta was no hero. Once he was. For many. He did everything one could do to the stock market. SCAM 1992 THE HARSHAD MEHTA STORY is all the same. It does everything to viewers, makes one financial literate, introduces a new no nonsense actor to Hindi arena, brings wholistic performances together and importantly stuns the audience.
When I started or rather decided to watch this web series I wasn't very upbeat. I absolutely had no expectations whatsoever. More so, its adapted from a book, I had my doubts. Anyhow, I had to watch to kill time so I took a chance. And boy, the way I got hooked!
Mr. Mehta (here the Director) doesn't rush to to take a dive in the financial markets. Instead he chooses a very subtle way of introducing common man to the story as it begins. The use of flashbacks supported by narration puts the story in context.
Screenplay is major pillar of this OTT presentation. रीस्क है तो इस्क है comes as punchline more appropriately so. The dialogues and one liners of the less character are thoughtfully crafted. The blend of Gujarati, Marathi and English never keeps you off the Dalal street. The ensemble of supporting cast carves out individual niches in the entire series. Pratik Gandhi paying Mehta will soon need to see the lawyer to change his surname. He speaks the life of HARSHAD MEHTA through every single move.
Overall, the series doesn't only portray the life of HARSHAD MEHTA but also brings out the loopholes those existed in the financial market. It doesn't give answers of why, and how. I always say that a good piece of art never answers but makes us face many questions. That's what it does.
Such a week rounded review - Will certainly watch!
ReplyDeleteKoi compliment kare to aise!... Especially when you say, "He speaks the life of HARSHAD MEHTA through every single move."... an actor is an actor when he is able to do this. Very crisp review. On my To-Do list for sure now.

ReplyDeleteVery nicely put sir, indeed very well made piece of art, with extraordinary timing, resource allocation, presentation, everything.
ReplyDeleteAs rightly said, it does put more questions to viewers' minds than it answers, and thats because the makers have managed to keep biases out, towards or against him, systems, government, officials, etc etc.
True, Harshad Mehata was not a hero, but he(atleast alone) was not a villain to the levels he was denegrated to. But, of course, in our systems, someone has to bear the brunt, beacause, its convenient for the rest.
And,a hero or villain, not very certain, but he surely was a hot topic of discussion, and continues to be so even after 20 years of his death. And yes, its surely debatable, as to whether its in him or in his proximity to money that people (including) me are interested!
